More than 25,000 white LED lights were strung upon 1.8 miles of suspension cables. "All 64 of them are programmed separately to create flowing patterns replicating waves, clouds and so on.

Some of the key aspects of the installation were thoselights that were carefully placed to not be visible to drivers (but be visible to the roof viewers) and the safety of the installation in general. The complete system was weatherized and energy efficient, with the total power consumption equivalent to that of a few household appliances.

The first lighting was held on March 5th, 2013, and it has been an instant hit with localites and tourists. Planned originally for a two-year run, support for and excitement began the campaign to keep the Bay Lights in place.
