The HJ Foundation: Where Philanthropy is Rooted in Action

The HJ Foundation: Where Philanthropy is Rooted in Action

The Democratic Republic of the Congo has long been affected by natural calamities and numerous other disasters. The communities endured immense hardship from these disasters, which resulted in a number of human losses. In such times of need, one person who has always stood by the people to provide humanitarian aid is Mr. Harish Jagtani, an Indian Entrepreneur who believes in the philosophy of ‘Action over words.’ For around 30 years, he has made public health and emergency response the pillars of his lasting commitment.

Accessible and Affordable Healthcare

HJ Hospitals’ network of multidisciplinary clinics is expanding across the DRC. With already existing clinics in Kinshasa, Lubumbashi, Goma, and Matadi, the hospital now has a new Centre in Lukala as well. With the opening of this new Centre, Mr. Harish aims to bring essential medical care to more people in need. The new Centre focuses on providing quality care and the charges are also economical.

Compassion in Action

Mr. Harish’s philanthropic initiatives are not new. In March 2023, a clinic offering free services was inaugurated in Kinshasa. This clinic can serve up to 300 patients daily. This clinic is said to be the lifeline for the vulnerable population who are often affected by tropical diseases and can’t afford quality healthcare services.

Formalizing Philanthropy with the HJ Foundation

The HJ Foundation was established in 2016 to serve as the formal institutional platform for Mr. Harish Jagtani’s philanthropic efforts. The foundation runs on the principle of “It is in giving that we receive”. Through the foundation, free dialysis, ophthalmology consultations, and prosthetic limbs were provided. In 2024, the “Gift A Vision” program was run in partnership with First Lady Denise Nyakeru Tshisekedi, which enabled 100 additional sight-restoring procedures. All of these projects share the same hallmark, addressing a vital need while preserving human dignity.

Emergency Response as a Measure of Effectiveness

For any humanitarian organization, a true test comes when something unexpected happens. In May 2023, when mudslides devastated Kalehe territory in South Kivu, the HJ Foundation came forward with immediate help. More than 80 Tonnes of food and essential goods were delivered via Serve Air Cargo trucks. For 15 days, a 20-bed mobile clinic with a multidisciplinary medical team provided free care. This rapid help was also praised by local authorities.

Philanthropy Rooted in Conviction

Mr. Harish Jagtani believes that economic success must come with moral responsibility. He says, “I see myself as a bridge between divine blessings and those in need”. He has also personally traveled to conflict zones to distribute essential supplies.

Actions Speak Louder Than Words

In under a decade, the HJ Foundation has helped thousands of lives in the DRC. From at-home dialysis to advanced cardiac surgery, from food distributions to emergency clinics, the impact is measured in lives. His work across healthcare and emergency relief reflects a powerful message: lasting change happens when compassion meets steadfast action.
